Standard Material Options |
General Properties |
General Chemical Resistance |
|
Resistant to: |
Attacked by: |
|
Red Rubber (SBR) |
Good physical properties and
abrasion resistance. Poor resistance to petroleum-based fluids.
Common applications include water pipeline flange gaskets, plumbing washers. |
Most moderate chemicals, wet or
dry, organic acids, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes. |
Ozone, strong acids, fats, oils,
greases, most hydrocarbons. |
|
Neoprene |
Low cost option suitable for most
rubber flange gasket needs. Neoprene offers good weather resistance, flame
retardance, and moderate resistance to petroleum-based fluids.
Commonly used for water and air line seals, many other applications. |
Moderate chemicals and acids,
ozone, oils, fats, greases, many oils, and solvents. |
Strong oxidizing acids, esters,
ketones, chlorinated, aromatic and nitro hydrocarbons. |
|
High Grade
Neoprene1 |
Similar to above but with enhanced
physical properties like tensile strength, elongation, compression set.
Good choice for dynamic seals where more durable elasticity and strength are
important. |
|
EPDM |
Excellent ozone, chemical, and
aging resistance but poor resistance to petroleum-based fluids.
Economical choice where weather and chemical resistance are important
features. |
Animal and vegetable oils, ozone,
strong and oxidizing chemicals. |
Mineral oils and solvents,
aromatic hydrocarbons. |
|
Buna-N |
Excellent resistance to petroleum-based
fluids. Good physical properties. Economical choice for gaskets
and seals in gas engines and other equipment where petroleum-based oils,
lubricants, and fuels are present. |
Many hydrocarbons, fats, oils,
greases, hydraulic fluids, chemicals. |
Ozone (except PVC blends), ketones,
esters, aldehydes, chlorinated and nitro hydrocarbons. |
|
FDA
White Nitrile |
Similar to above, but made of FDA
approved materials suitable for food processing and serving equipment.
|
|
Silicone |
Excellent high and low temperature
properties. Fair physical properties. |
Moderate or oxidizing chemicals,
ozone, concentrated sodium hydroxide. |
Many solvents, oils, concentrated
acids, dilute sodium hydroxide. |
|
High Grade
Silicone1 |
Same as above only with enhanced
physical properties. |
|
Viton™
(Fluoro-elastomer) |
Excellent oil and air resistance
both at low and high temperatures. Very good chemical resistance. |
All aliphatic, aromatic and
halogenated hydrocarbons, acids, animal and vegetable oils. |
Ketones, low molecular weight
esters and nitro containing compounds. |
Notes
1. High Grade Neoprene and Silicone compounds are available in all standard
Standard Flange Gasket dimensions by quotation.
2. Most materials available in standard 50-70 durometer hardness (Shore A), with many semi-standard options from 30-90 durometer.
3. Availability on some options may vary.
